The MTBA 2002 Australian National Championships
took place in Mt Beauty, where Niki competed in the downhill.
After qualifying in 1st position, Niki finished 3rd on the
podium in a close race behind Tai-Lee Muxlow, and Talitha
Fitzgerald.
The local natives of Mt Beauty in Victoria,
had their own lines picked out, as seen by this young kangaroo
coming into one of the final corners on the downhill track.
The race circuit then moved to Thredbo for
the Cycling Australia National Championships, where Niki was
scheduled to contest both the Downhill and Cross Country.
Unfortunately on a training ride during the week Niki sustained
an injury which sadly prevented Niki from being able to compete
at the Thredbo event.

Although Niki wasn't able to repeat
her 2001 National Series Champion title this year, she is
nonetheless extremely proud of her 2nd place in the 2002 series,
having put in a strong performance consistently throughout
the season.

Cross country is a gruelling sport,
something which one never feels that they are fit enough to
tackle. At some point though, you have to give it a go
and see how fit you actually are. At Thredbo for the
National XC round, Niki followed up a day of downhill (and
a night of celebrations) by contesting elite women XC. Niki
finished in 6th place, some way off the pace of the front
runners but proving that with more dedication, Niki could
become a contender in both elite DH and XC.
